The Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: “Woe to the one who speaks to make the people laugh by lying. Woe to him! Woe to him! Woe to him!” (Sunan Tirmidhi)
Question:
Is it permissible to participate in or attend comedy shows?
Answer:
Laughter and light-heartedness, in and of themselves, are not prohibited in Islam – provided that they remain within the boundaries prescribed by the Shariah.
However, the reality of most contemporary comedy shows is in direct contradiction with Islamic teachings. These performances frequently involve:
Offensive and inappropriate jokes
Hurting the feelings of others
Use of lies for the sake of humour
Public exposure of people’s faults
Improper intermingling between men and women
Such practices clearly violate the limits set by Allah and His Messenger Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam and cannot be overlooked or justified under the guise of entertainment.
Allah Ta’ala has issued a stern warning in the Qur’an: “And those who hurt believing men and believing women without them doing anything (wrong), they have burdened themselves with false accusation and a clear sin.” (Surah Al-Ahzaab, Ayah 58)
The Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam also issued a severe warning regarding lying for humour: “Woe to the one who speaks to make the people laugh by lying. Woe to him! Woe to him! Woe to him!” (Sunan Tirmidhi)
And regarding the exposure of others’ faults: “Whoever conceals the (hidden) fault of his Muslim brother, Allah Ta’ala will conceal his faults on the Day of Resurrection. And whoever exposes the fault of his Muslim brother, Allah Ta’ala will expose his faults—until He disgraces him with it in his own home.” (Sunan Ibn Majah)
Considering these divine and prophetic warnings, it is not permissible to attend or participate in comedy shows that include the elements mentioned above. Doing so entails grave spiritual risks and contravenes the moral code laid down by the Shariah. Such gatherings should be strictly avoided by any Muslim who fears Allah Ta’ala and the accountability of the Hereafter.
