Pigskin shoes

Nasihah (Advice):  The Impurity of Swine

Sayyiduna Abu Tha’labah Radiyallahu anhu reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, we live in a land of the people of the Book. Can we eat from their utensils?” Rasulullah sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, “Do not eat from them unless you cannot find anything else, then wash them and eat from them.” [Sahih Bukhari]

Imam Nawawi Rahimahullah states, “The meaning of utensils are those in which is cooked the meat of swine, or from which wine is drank.” [Fathul Bari]

Question:

There is a shoe manufactured by Adidas, currently trending, called the Samba Shoe. According to the Adidas website, it is made with pigskin (see: https://www.adidas.co.za/black-samba). Many Muslims are wearing these shoes. What is the ruling regarding wearing shoes made from pigskin?

Answer:

According to Shariah, the pig is regarded as Najisul – ‘Ayn (intrinsically and entirely impure). Its skin remains impure even after tanning. [Tahtawi Page 168]

Therefore, it is not permissible to wear shoes made from pigskin.

Muslims should be made aware of this so that they avoid wearing such footwear.
